random thoughts.

  • i find it odd when people cry in the face of death.

i mean like when someone u know or was close to you dies. why? because we are not crying for the dead. we are not wailing "ohh, what if he goes to hell? i wish he had prayed more"

no. instead we cry for ourselves. "im going to miss him so much... how am i going to survive without him.. who will buy me my bread?!"

we are all so, so selfish.

yes we're selfish. thats why we cry. hence its not odd. QED.

    my questions:
    1. is it easy for us to imagine eternity? that is beginninglessness (lol) and endlessness.
    2. does a soul really exist? :S or is it just an invention coz we're afraid of mortality?
    3. does a centipede know that its a centipede with a unique identity etc..?
    4. why do we make false promises and go through elaborate courtship rituals when we know that its simply sex we want? is romance an idealistic concept of human love which we can now dispense of?
    5. if there is so much space and so much matter, is it possible and that we're not alone? how high is the probablity for ET existence? very high? very low?
    6. if the eye is so perfect why cant we see germs or distant galaxies? if our digestion is so perfect why do we produce waste? if our bodies are so perfect why do we succumb to illness? or could it be that we're NOT perfect, but inefficient just like new computer models that keep slowly improving their performances every year?
    7. why do we conform to useless social customs like wearing clothes, (regardless of the weather and environmental hazards?)
    8. why do people create works of art? what is beauty? does it have a standard? who/what determines it?
    9. what happens after death?
    10. what if the religion you believe is false and you're faced with someone else when you die?

i could go on all day

"When an apple has ripened and falls, why does it fall? Because of its attraction to the earth, because its stalk withers, because it is dried by the sun, because it grows heavier, because the wind shakes it, or because the boy standing below wants to eat it?

Nothing is the cause. All this is only the coincidence of conditions in which all vital organic and elemental events occur. And the botanist who finds that the apple falls because the cellular tissue decays and so forth is equally right with the child who stands under the tree and says the apple fell because he wanted to eat it and prayed for it." - War and Peace (Tolstoy)

agree with his predeternimism? or can we rise above fatalism to control our course of action? and for the last time, does free will exist or not?! yes or no please! :D

is that what u really think? do u really feel that ppl cry that much at funerals cos they cant imagine life without that person? that they are feeling selfish at that moment?i dont believe it. yes! a part of u will feel that way. but what scares everyone the most is this:

"Just look at him. he was so well yesterday. he's so young. who would have expected him to die just like that. he had so many hopes and dreams. so much he had wanted to do in life. just last week he was planning to take his wife and kids to a resort to spend some quality time with them. does everyone die like that? without any prior warning or notice? taking all their hopes and dreams along with them? is that going to happen to me too? am i going to die like that? i might die even today? what have i achieved in my life so far? i havent even prayed for over a month. when was the last time i touched the Quran. am i really living life the way i should be? am i wasting my time here? i dont wanna DIE! ive got so much i wanna do. oh god please, i dont wanna die like him :("

Thats why people cry so much at funerals. not just becos they are selfish.

    @ k.s.,

"i, i, i.. me me me.. i dont wanna die, i wanna live.. i have so much to do.. i. i . i. me me me me me mem ememememememe... yeah so he's dead, so he's lost his hopes, but i dont want that to happen to me.. i . i . i .. me me me.. yada ME!!! NO! MEEEE!!!!...."

no offense but sounds very self-centered to me.

errr....wasnt it obvious that i was exaggerating? and come on. u get what i was trying to say. yes! ppl are self centered. i never disagreed with that. all i said was that ppl are pushed towards crying not mainly becos that person wont be in our lives anymore. but cos we fear that same thing might happen to us. The thought that his family and everyone else around him would suffer overcomes my own selfishness of losing him from my life. OR maybe its just me :)

what was obvious is as you've said so clearly:

all i said was that ppl are pushed towards crying not mainly becos that person wont be in our lives anymore.

    which is, to me, selfish.

"The thought that his family and everyone else around him would suffer overcomes my own selfishness of losing him from my life"

and why does that thought overwhelm you? because you feel you ought to show some sympathy toward that person? why is that? social propriety? because you love/like that person? if you didnt know that person, would you feel the same emotion? are you compassionate because you feel that if you dont share in the mourner's sorrow, if you dont lend a shoulder to cry on, you'll be termed selfish? are you afraid that someone might label you selfish? so in that sense, arent you afraid of your reputation and hence being selfish? and yes maybe it might be just you. coz it certainly isnt me. so i am interested to know why you'd show sympathy to that person's relatives. why does their suffering matter to you? your love for them compels it, you might say. but love for another is never selfless either. its a give-and-take relationship. as an emotion it might seem on the surface totally devoid of selfishness, but this emotion is generated by a selfish need for companionship, for an expectation that if one helps/gives, the other will return the same favour, for a succesful partnership that would raise MY kids, and my lineage prosper. whatever benifits to the other help in holding him to me. ok enough i guess.
