Hehe.. There are other words that seem as daunting to foreigners. My wife recently met a confused British couple at the Male' Airport who were desperately asking around for "Hul Hul" Hotel. Guess which one's that? :P

You'd think they'd get a hint after forming the capital on an island called Male', but noooo, there they go again (didn't even throw in an apostrophe this time, geez)

a white dude once thought that minivan news is a mobile crew operating out of a mini van ...
i almost didnt correct him ... as i kinda liked the idea of a mobile news crew in male'... hehe ...

    heheh. amusing one.

something i find particularly amusing is some titles with Male' but without the apostrophe at the end of Male', like "Male Pickup Service"

You know, since everyone's going on about "apostrophes" (which are actually accents, since, really: there's a major difference between "e'" and "é".

As per the Brits who declare our lovely home i.e. މާލެ to be "Maaley", obviously you'd find the "correct" spelling to be Malé. But that's not it at all, I believe, that a proper transliteration of the Maldivian pronounciation could be achieved with Mále (an "a" with an acute accent, chosen due to my affinity for the Hispanic modes). Or Māle. A with a macron, if we were to use Standard Indic, the "e" doesn't really go under much change, does it?

I mean, the reason why Divehi transliteration hasn't adopted Standard Indic is beyond me. But do have a look at it.

And anyways, I suppose that if we used accents in Herethere; we get "Hay-ray thay-ray", losing focus of the original pronounciation.

I think it was the confusion that led to the spelling of the new Addu resort to be written as "Herathere Island Resort". Can't go wrong there... or can you?
